What is the Gospel and why is it important?
9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. – 1 John 4:9
The word “Gospel” means “good news”. The Gospel is the story of how Jesus (God’s son) came down to Earth and died on the cross to save us from death and to bring us true life.
God, out of His immense love for us, gave Adam and Eve (the first humans ever created) a choice between choosing good (God’s way) or evil (satan’s way). Unfortunately, Adam and Eve chose to disobey what God told them to do, and believed that satan’s way was better. This event is known as “The Fall”, and it is why we live in a sinful, fallen world today. But the story does not end with sin, death, and a broken world.
God had a plan all along. He sent his good and perfect Son, Jesus down to Earth. While on Earth, Jesus went around serving others, loving people in radical ways, performing miracles, and preaching the good news! Before Jesus, people had to offer continual sacrifices to be “right” with God and clear their name. But, Jesus came to change this. Jesus is holy and perfect son of God. He has never made a single mistake or sin. Because He was without sin, His sacrifice was the only perfect payment for our own sins. The Son of God was beaten and nailed to a cross. All hope for renewal seemed lost. But, three days later, Jesus came out of his tomb and was alive! Jesus conquered death and the grave! Jesus made it possible for our sin to be forgiven through His sacrifice and victory over death.
We no longer have to strive to earn salvation. We no longer have to earn a place in Heaven or a chance to know God. Because of Jesus, salvation, eternal life, and a relationship with God, are now a gift. All we have to do to receive that gift is to simply acknowledge that we have messed up more times than we could ever count, ask God to forgive us for our sins, and make a commitment to follow Him.
Following God is not about following a list of hard rules. Following God is about obeying him to the best of our ability and committing to get to know Him better. God knows that we are human and miss the mark, and he loves us beyond our understanding anyway. Making a commitment to Christ is the most important decision you could ever make. You are no longer held captive by the sins you have committed no matter how horrible they may seem. You don’t have to live in shame of your past. In Jesus, you can live confidently that you are saved and are secure for eternity. Because of the powerful love and grace of God, you are free.
